Who the firkin hell is…Anna Webb? Leave a comment January 31, 2014 by 250 Beers

“What the firkin hell is this?” I hear you ask. Well, let me explain…

‘Who the firkin hell is…?’ is a weekly glimpse into the lives of individuals that work (some tirelessly) to bring the Brisbane public the very best in good beer. Some are brewers, some own/work in your favourite bar, some are retailers and some are brewery reps.

If you don’t know what a firkin is then the whole beer-related, play-on-words title will be lost on you right?! Fear not – click here for more information on firkins.

This week is week number 13 in the series – unlucky for some but not you because in the firkin hot seat is Anna Webb representing Mountain Goat…

What is your day job?

Beer Ambassador/Roadie for Mountain Goat Brewery and Lock Stock and Barrel Distributors.

How long have you been doing that for?

Full-time since March 2013, part-time a year or so longer.

What were you up to before that?

What was I not up to?! Hospitality industry veteran in everything from FOH & BOH to procurement consultant, nanny, make-up artist, business owner, door to door sales rep & manager…the list goes on.

What is the best part about your job?

So many positives, it’s hard to narrow it down. I work for (and with) truly amazing people, with an awesome product, in a creative industry, fantastic customers and every day is different. It’s just as awesome as you might think.

What was your ‘epiphany beer’? The beer that made you ‘turn your back on cack’?

I’m not actually sure if it was any specific beer but I went from drinking generic lagers and thinking beer was pretty ordinary to drinking ales and thinking “Wow! Flavour! Yum!”

Have you ever had a beer that has totally blown you away? If so, what was it?

I’m a bit of a fan of NZ beers at the moment and I have said before that I’d like to marry and have babies with 8 Wired ‘Hopwired’ Fresh Hopped IPA. That shit is just delicious.

What is your preferred style of beer and why?

It depends on the context…whether I’ve just finished strenuous exercise (ha!) or quietly indulging on the sofa debating the problems of the world with my best friends…every beer has a time and place.

If I gave you $100 in cash right now with the only proviso being that you had to spend it on beer, what would you indulge in?

I’d take you out for a few drinks, Daz, for being so generous. Then we’d drink a selection of NZ beers and a Goat or two.

I have a large hoard of empty beer bottles and another of beer glassware. Do you have any beer-related vices?

I dabble but no, I have to say other than insisting on having my own beer fridge I’m pretty laid back about beer. I like to drink it.

In your opinion, where’s the best place to grab a decent beer in Brisbane?

Oh, man I can’t choose favourites. Sorry. Too many. That’s a great problem to have I guess. It’s exciting to see Brisbane is changing and between breweries, bars and bottle shops you can find a decent beer almost anywhere.

What is so good about it there?

Brisbane and greater QLD is finally opening it’s mind and taste buds to the idea of quality vs quantity. More and more young people are spending their money on high quality flavour instead of just getting shit-faced on fizzy, bitter water which is nice to see.

Bottles or cans?

Cans and kegs…not entirely different beasts really.

What are your hopes for the future of Brisbane’s craft beer industry?

I hope to see more women brewing beer, opening and running bars, and representing breweries. There is definitely an increase in women’s interest in drinking and talking about craft beer. Brisbane Chicks with Ales (CWA) being a perfect example but for some reason it still seems to be a largely male-dominated industry in Brisbane in terms of brewing, representing, and running craft beer-orientated venues.

This isn’t a job interview but where do you see yourself in five years time?

Married and pregnant to a delicious, little NZ IPA with little throw-backs running around in my vege patch. Failing that I’ll have my own business in healing wholefoods and be educating people about listening to what their body is telling them not what big corporations are telling them.

What would your response be if somebody stopped you in the street and asked you what your favourite beer blog is?

I’d respond with “Whoever had last given me $100 to spend on beer, I guess, because they must be awesome.”

Anna – thanks for taking part – I’ll catch you soon and we’ll spend that $100!

Next week will feature…I haven’t yet decided!
